Mamie Evelyn Locke (born March 19, 1954) is an American politician and educator. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She has served in important roles in government and education.
From 1996 to 2004, she was a member of the Hampton, Virginia city council. She also served as the mayor of Hampton from 2000 to 2004. Since 2004, she has been a member of the Senate of Virginia. She represents parts of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Portsmouth. She also represents part of York County.
Besides her political work, Mamie Locke is a Professor of Political Science. She was also the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Hampton University.

Mamie Locke's Education Journey
Learning and Degrees
Mamie Locke has a strong educational background. She earned her first degree, a B.A. degree, in 1976. This degree was in history and political science from Tougaloo College.
She then continued her studies at Atlanta University. There, she focused on advanced political science. She received her M.A. degree in 1978. Later, she earned her Ph.D. in 1984.
In 1986, she also completed a special program. This program focused on Middle Eastern studies. She studied at the American University in Cairo.
Mamie Locke's Political Career
Starting in Local Government
Mamie Locke began her political journey in local government. She was first elected to the Hampton City Council in 1996. The City Council is a group of people who make decisions for the city.
Her colleagues on the council recognized her leadership. They chose her as Vice Mayor in 1998. Then, in 2000, she was chosen to be the Mayor of Hampton. She served as Mayor until 2004.
Moving to the State Senate
In 2003, Mamie Locke decided to run for the Senate of Virginia. This is a part of the state government. She competed in a Democratic primary election for the 2nd Senate district. She won this primary with 48.11% of the votes.
After winning the primary, she ran in the general election. She won against her opponents, a Republican and an independent candidate. She received 64.75% of the votes.
Re-election Successes
Mamie Locke continued to serve in the Virginia Senate. In 2007, she ran for re-election and had no opponents. This meant she was re-elected without needing to campaign.
In 2011, she ran for re-election again. She won against her Republican opponent, Tom E. Harmon IV. She received 65.39% of the votes in that election. She has continued to serve in the Virginia Senate since then.
