The Mammillaria guillauminiana is a special type of plant that belongs to the Cactaceae family, which is the cactus family! It's a unique cactus that grows in specific parts of Mexico.
Where Does This Cactus Live?
This amazing cactus is found only in a few places in northwestern Mexico. It is endemic there, which means it naturally grows nowhere else in the world. You can find it in the states of Durango and Sinaloa.
The Mammillaria guillauminiana cactus likes to grow in desert scrub areas. It prefers to live in shady spots, often nestled between rocks where there's some rich soil called humus. It grows at high elevations, usually between 1,300 and 1,800 meters (about 4,265 to 5,900 feet) above sea level.
Its Conservation Story
For a while, scientists thought this cactus was extinct in the wild. This means they believed it no longer existed in its natural habitat. It was even listed on the IUCN Red List as "extinct in the wild."
But then, something exciting happened! In 2003, this cactus was rediscovered. This means people found it growing in the wild again! Because of this happy discovery, its conservation status was changed. Now, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists it as a Data Deficient species. This means scientists don't have enough information yet to know exactly how many of these cacti are left or how much danger they are in. More research is needed to protect them!
