About Manel Fontdevila
Starting as a Cartoonist
Manel Fontdevila started drawing comics when he was just 15 years old. He worked with groups that cared about the environment and local neighborhoods. In 1982, his drawings appeared in a local newspaper called "Regió 7".
While studying Fine Arts in Barcelona in 1990, Manel began publishing his work in several magazines. These included El Víbora, Makoki, Cairo, Totem, and Viñetas.
In 1993, he started his series Emilio/a in the magazine Puta Mili. He also worked on a type of fan-made magazine called a fanzine called Mr. Brain presenta from 1993 to 1997. He even wrote scripts for other artists, like "¡Hola, terrícola" for Pep Brocal in 1994.
Becoming Well-Known
In 1995, Manel created La Parejita S.A. for El Jueves magazine. This comic strip followed the funny daily life of a couple. It quickly became very popular and won an award for Best Screenplay at the Còmic Salo Barcelona that same year.
In 1997, he started another comic strip called Para ti, que eres joven with Albert Monteys. This two-page comic was full of jokes about young people. From 2000 to 2004, Manel was also an editor at El Jueves magazine.
He published a collection of short stories called Mantecatos in 2003, which won an award for best comic in 2004. Another book, Rosenda y otros momentos pop (2005), did not sell as many copies.
In 2007, Manel released Super Puta, a personal project he had worked on for two years. He also started drawing a daily cartoon for the newspaper Público and worked with El Manglar. He continued his section in Público until the newspaper stopped printing in 2012.
In March 2012, Manel began publishing his cartoons in the online newspaper eldiario.es.
Leaving El Jueves
In June 2014, Manel Fontdevila decided to leave El Jueves magazine. This happened because the publisher, RBA, did not allow him to publish a cartoon on the cover. Other cartoonists also left the magazine at the same time. These artists then created their own online comic called Orgullo y satisfacción. Later, Manel started working for the monthly satirical magazine Mongolia.
