The Mangakahia River is an important waterway in the Northland Region of New Zealand. It flows through the beautiful North Island, helping to shape the landscape. This river is about 48 kilometers (30 miles) long. It starts its journey in the Mataraua Forest.

The River's Journey

The Mangakahia River begins its flow heading east from the Mataraua Forest. After traveling about 20 kilometers (12 miles), it meets the smaller Awarua River. At this point, the Mangakahia River changes direction, turning towards the southeast.

Meeting Other Rivers

As it continues its path, the Mangakahia River is joined by other streams. It meets the Opouteke River near a place called Pakotai. Then, the river turns east again for a while. It soon connects with the Hikurangi River.

Flowing to the Wairoa River

After joining the Hikurangi River, the Mangakahia River turns south. It flows past the town of Titoki. Finally, it merges with the Wairua River. When these two rivers meet, they form the larger Wairoa River. This meeting point is located roughly halfway between the cities of Whangarei and Dargaville.

What Does the Name Mean?

The name Mangakāhia has a special meaning in the Māori language. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage has translated it. It means "stream of the New Zealand passionfruit vine." This name likely refers to the plants that grow along the river's banks.
