Journey of the Manganui River

The Manganui River starts its journey west of a place called Ruakaka. From there, it generally flows towards the west.

Where the River Ends

The Manganui River eventually flows into the Wairoa River. This meeting point is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) east of Dargaville.

Winding Path and Oxbow Lakes

The lower part of the Manganui River is very interesting. It takes a very twisty and winding path. This area is often low and swampy. Because of its winding nature, you can find several oxbow lakes along this part of the river.

What are Oxbow Lakes?

An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake. It forms when a wide bend in a river gets cut off from the main river channel. This happens over time as the river changes its course. The Manganui River's slow flow through flat land helps these lakes form.
