History of Manises
Manises has a long history. The earliest records show that the Romans were active here. They built an aqueduct to bring water to the city of Valencia. This aqueduct is still called "The Arcs" today.
Later, the Arabs lived in Manises and helped the town grow. In 1238, King James I of Valencia gave Manises to one of his knights, Artal de Luna. This is the first official mention of Manises.
Pottery and Industry
Manises became very important for its ceramics, especially pottery. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, it was the main place for making a special type of pottery called Hispano-Moresque ware. This pottery was sold all over Europe.
The pottery industry grew a lot in the late 1800s. In 1917, the School of Ceramics was started. Here, people could learn how to make different kinds of pottery, including artistic ceramics and tiles. Today, many small businesses continue this tradition.
The growth of industry led to more people moving to Manises. The population grew a lot in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1924, Manises was officially granted city status.

The Famous Ceramics of Manises
In the early 1300s, the Boil family took over Manises. They brought in the special skill of making lusterware pottery from Andalusia. This pottery had a shiny, metallic look, often with gold and blue colors.
Manises ceramics were very popular across Europe until the late 1500s. They were often called "work of Valencia" or "Mallorca." This was because sailors from Mallorca often traded them.
Kings and queens loved Manises pottery. It was sent to France, Italy, and especially Naples. Popes like Calixtus III and Alexander VI ordered many pieces and tiles for the Vatican. Manises ceramics were even found in palaces across Europe. Many famous painters included them in their artworks.
Trading these ceramics led to the creation of export companies. Italian, Cypriot, and Turkish traders were among the first. They carefully packed tiles and other ceramic items in large pottery jars. These jars were covered with string and straw to protect them. Ships would leave the port of Valencia with these valuable goods.
In the early 1900s, a new art style called modernism influenced ceramics. Tiles were not just for floors anymore. They were used to decorate building fronts with rich colors. This trend continues today.
Two important things happened for Manises ceramics. In 1914, the School of Ceramics of Manises was founded. Then, in 1969, the Municipal Museum of Ceramics opened. This museum shows how ceramics have developed over time, from old industrial pieces to modern art.
