Mannahill, also known as Manna Hill, is a small town in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located in the Northeast Pastoral district, making it one of the most eastern towns in South Australia.

History of Mannahill

Mannahill has an interesting past! It was once an important stop on a special path called a "stock route." This route was used to move farm animals from New South Wales to a railway station in Terowie. The town also helped out with early gold mining nearby.

Mannahill became an official town in the mid-1880s. It was planned as a place where trains could get water and be looked after. This was for the railway line connecting Peterborough and Cockburn. The railway line was finished in 1887, and the railway station was built even earlier, in 1886.

In 1886, a group of important people asked for money to help find more gold in the Mannahill Goldfields. Around the same time, a newspaper article described the journey to Mannahill during the gold rush. It mentioned that the trip was mostly across flat, dry land. Travelers had to bring their own food and water.

The article also described Mannahill as having a large hotel that could fit about 50 people. This hotel was busy during sheep shearing season. Shearers and teamsters from nearby farms were the main customers. The area around the town was described as looking quite empty.

Today, the original Mannahill Hotel, built in 1889, is still standing. The Mannahill Police Station is located on Railway Terrace. People have been keeping weather records in Mannahill for over 100 years!
