Manning is a very small community in North Dakota, United States. It is the main town, or "county seat," for Dunn County. This means important county offices are located here. Manning was started in 1908, the same year Dunn County was officially formed.

In the 2020 census, Manning had a population of 47 people. Even though it's not an official city, the United States Census Bureau recognized Manning and the area around it as a "Census Designated Place" in 2010. This helps them count people in smaller communities.

How Manning Got Its Name

Manning was named after a pioneer rancher named Dan Manning (1845–1914). He was a big supporter of the area and helped it grow. At first, some people thought about naming the community Owensville. This would have been after William P. Owens (1870–1913), because county work was done at his house. However, Owens decided he didn't want the community named after him.
