Joseph Emmanuel "Manno" Charlemagne (born April 14, 1948 – died December 10, 2017) was a famous Haitian singer, songwriter, and politician. He was known for his political folk songs, which he sang in both French and Creole. Manno was also an activist who fought for what he believed in.
He had to live outside of Haiti twice. This happened in the 1980s and again from 1991 to 1994. During these times, Haiti was controlled by a military group called a junta.

Growing Up in Haiti
Manno Charlemagne grew up in a place called Carrefour. This town is just south of Haiti's capital city, Port-au-Prince. As a child, he was inspired by the songs of farmers who came to the area looking for work. He also sang in his Catholic school choir.
Manno was raised by his aunt. He didn't know who his father was until he was 37 years old.
Manno's Political Journey
After a long period of strict rule in Haiti, called the Duvalier dictatorship, ended in 1986, Manno became very active. He started a youth group and a choir in his old neighborhood, Carrefour.
Later, in 1990, a new president named Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected. Manno supported him and even worked as an unofficial helper in the government. But this didn't last long. About nine months later, a military group took over the country. They removed Haiti's first freely elected president.
On October 11, soldiers came to Manno's home. They treated him roughly in front of his family and took him to jail. His wife, Chantel, and their baby son, Ti-Manno, had to hide. They later went to the island of Guadeloupe for safety.
In June 1995, Manno Charlemagne was elected as the mayor of Port-au-Prince. He served in this important role until 1999.
His Music Career
