Manson was named after Mahlon Dickerson Manson. He was an important person in American history. He served as a general during the American Civil War, which was a big war in the United States. He also held a high political job as the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana.

Manson was officially planned and created on June 30, 1874. The people who helped start the community were Lucinda Clark, David Clark, and Rebecca Clark. They "laid out" the area, which means they designed where the streets and lots would be.
In the early 1900s, a group called the New Lights had a small church in Manson. This church was a place where people gathered for worship and community events.
