Manteca Waterslides facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Manteca Waterslides was a fun water park located in the Central Valley town of Manteca, California. It was open for 30 years, from 1974 to 2004. A person named R.H. "Budge" Brown started the park. Many people thought it was one of the best water parks in the United States. It was easy to get to because it was close to Interstate 5. The park was also known as Oakwood Lake. People who visited often remembered its huge slide called "V-Max."

Why the Park Closed

In the summer of 2004, the park announced it would close its doors forever in September of that year. The owners explained that the park had to pay a lot of money for things like workers' compensation and health care for its employees.

New Rules and Costs

At the time, new rules were put in place by Governor Grey Davis. These rules meant the park had to pay extra fees. These new costs made it too expensive for the park to stay open.

What Happened to the Site

By April 2008, the area where the water park used to be was covered by water. This happened because Oakwood Lake grew larger. There were plans to build new homes on the land around the lake. These homes would be for people who travel to work in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Future Hopes

In 2010, there was talk that someone might buy the land. People hoped that a new developer would bring the water park back to life. However, this did not happen.

Oakwood Lake Amphitheater

The Manteca Waterslides park also had a place called the Oakwood Lake Amphitheatre. This was a special outdoor stage where many concerts were held. It was a popular spot for music lovers.
