Mantua is a small, unincorporated community located in Greene County, Alabama, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
A Look Back at Mantua's History
Mantua likely got its name from a beautiful city in Italy, also called Mantua. In the early 1800s, settlers began to arrive in this area. Many of them came from a place called Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Changing Counties
When Mantua was first settled, it was actually part of Pickens County. However, in the 1860s, the people living in Mantua asked for a change. They wanted their community to become part of Greene County instead. Their request was approved, and Mantua has been in Greene County ever since.
The Mantua Post Office
For many years, Mantua had its own post office. It opened in 1880, helping residents send and receive mail. The post office served the community for over a century before it closed its doors in 1989.
