Who Was Manuel Andreu Colomer?

Manuel Andreu Colomer was born in Catalonia. He became well-known for his efforts to support workers' rights and for his involvement in Catalan politics. He believed strongly in helping ordinary people and making their voices heard.

Standing Up for Workers: Early Union Days

Manuel Andreu Colomer was a trade unionist. A trade union is like a club or organization for workers. Its main goal is to protect workers' rights, make sure they have fair pay, good working conditions, and a safe place to work.

Andreu Colomer was one of the people who helped start an important union called Solidaritat Obrera. This name means "Workers' Solidarity" in Catalan. Later, he also helped create its next big union, the National Confederation of Labor, often called the CNT. The CNT became one of the largest and most powerful worker unions in Spain.

In 1913, Manuel Andreu Colomer took on an important job: he was in charge of the union's newspaper, also called Solidaridad Obrera. Newspapers like this were very important back then because they helped spread news and ideas to many workers.

Leading the CNT

Manuel Andreu Colomer was a very active member of the CNT. On October 18, 1914, he represented the CNT at a big meeting called the Assembly of Mataró. Because of his strong beliefs and actions, he was put in prison shortly after this meeting.

Even after being imprisoned, his dedication to the workers was recognized. On October 30, 1915, he was chosen to be the General Secretary of the CNT. This was a very important leadership role, similar to being the main leader or president of the entire union. He held this position until August 1916. As General Secretary, he helped guide the union and make important decisions for its members.

A Change in Political Views

Manuel Andreu Colomer had strong Catalanist convictions. This means he believed strongly in the culture, language, and self-governance of Catalonia. Over time, his political ideas led him to join a different group called Acció Catalana Republicana. This was a political party that focused on Catalan identity and republican ideas, which means they supported a government led by elected representatives rather than a king or queen.

In October 1936, Manuel Andreu Colomer was elected to the Barcelona City Council. The City Council is a group of elected officials who make decisions about how the city of Barcelona is run, like managing public services, local laws, and city planning. This showed his continued commitment to public service and to his home region of Catalonia.
