Biography of Manuel Antônio de Almeida
Manuel Antônio de Almeida was born in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. His father was Antônio de Almeida, a lieutenant, and his mother was Josefina Maria de Almeida. We don't know much about his early school days.
In 1849, he started studying medicine. He finished his medical degree in 1855. Manuel faced money problems, which led him to start writing and working as a journalist.
His most important work, Memoirs of a Police Sergeant, was first published in a newspaper. It came out in parts, like a TV series, from 1852 to 1853. This way of publishing stories in small parts was called a feuilleton. The story appeared in a newspaper called Correio Mercantil.
Later, in 1858, Manuel became the manager of a printing company called Tipografia Nacional. There, he met another famous Brazilian writer, Machado de Assis.
Manuel wanted to start a career in politics. He decided to travel to the city of Campos dos Goytacazes to do some research for his political plans. He boarded a ship called Hermes. Sadly, the ship sank near the coast of Macaé. Manuel Antônio de Almeida died in this accident.
