Early Life and Becoming a Priest

Manuel Sobreviñas was born on April 7, 1924, in a town called Dinalupihan, which is in the Philippines. From a young age, he felt called to serve God. He studied hard and worked towards becoming a priest.

On March 10, 1951, he was officially ordained as a priest. This was a very special day for him, marking the beginning of his long service to the Church. As a priest, he helped lead church services and supported his community.

Serving as a Bishop

After many years as a priest, Manuel Sobreviñas was chosen for an even bigger role. On April 7, 1979, he was appointed as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Manila. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop in a large area called an archdiocese. At the same time, he was also made a titular bishop of a place called Tulana.

On May 25, 1979, he was officially consecrated as a bishop. This ceremony made him a full bishop. He continued to serve the people of Manila.

Later, on February 25, 1993, Bishop Sobreviñas was given a new important assignment. He became the main bishop of the Diocese of Imus. A diocese is a specific area that a bishop is responsible for. He led the Diocese of Imus until he retired on October 22, 2001.

Later Years and Legacy

After his retirement, Bishop Sobreviñas continued to be a respected figure in the Church. He passed away on July 18, 2020, at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living Filipino bishop. His life was an example of dedication and service to his faith and his country.
