Manoel Ferraz de Campos Salles (born February 15, 1841 – died June 28, 1913) was an important Brazilian lawyer, coffee farmer, and politician. He became the fourth president of Brazil. He was born in the city of Campinas, which is in the state of São Paulo.

Campos Sales was a very important figure in Brazilian history. He was known for his work as a lawyer and for owning a coffee farm. But most of all, he was famous for his long career in politics. He held many different jobs in the government before becoming president.

Early Life and Education

Campos Sales studied law at the Faculdade de Direito do Largo de São Francisco in São Paulo. He finished his studies in 1863. This education helped him start his career in public service.

A Career in Politics

After becoming a lawyer, Campos Sales began his political journey. He served as a "provincial deputy" three times. This meant he helped make laws for his local area. He was also a "general-deputy" once, which was a role in the national government.

He also worked as the Minister of Justice from 1889 to 1891. Later, he became a senator and the governor of São Paulo from 1896 to 1897. These experiences prepared him for the highest office in the country.

Becoming President

The most important part of his political life was when he was elected president of Brazil. He served as president from 1898 to 1902. This was a time when Brazil was still quite new as a republic.

What He Did as President

During his time as president, Campos Sales focused on improving Brazil's economy. He worked with his Minister of Finance, Joaquim Murtinho, to make big changes. They introduced strict financial rules to help the country's money situation. These changes were meant to make Brazil's economy stronger and more stable.

Later Life

After his presidency, Campos Sales continued to be an influential figure. He passed away in São Paulo on June 28, 1913.
