He was officially made a bishop in a special ceremony called a consecration on October 9, 1732. This ceremony was performed by Cardinal Diego de Astorga y Céspedes.

Later, on May 5, 1738, he was moved to lead a different, larger church area. This new role was in the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela. This was another important step in his church career.

Becoming Grand Inquisitor

On January 1, 1742, Manuel Isidro Orozco Manrique de Lara took on a very powerful role. He became the Grand Inquisitor of Spain. The Grand Inquisitor was the head of the Spanish Inquisition. This was a special court that worked to keep the Catholic faith strong in Spain. He served in this role during a time known as the Enlightenment. This was a period when new ideas about reason and science were becoming popular.
