Manuel Orozco y Berra facts for kids
Manuel Orozco y Berra (born June 8, 1816 – died January 27, 1881) was a famous Mexican historian. He was born and died in Mexico City. He was also a member of the Mexican Academy of Language. Manuel Orozco y Berra is seen as one of the most important Mexican historians of the 1800s. He wrote many important books about the history of ancient Mexico and its people, especially about Mesoamerica.
Manuel Orozco y Berra's Career
In 1844, Manuel Orozco y Berra gave a speech about Mexico's Independence. He also started publishing articles about politics and literature. Three years later, in 1847, he became a lawyer in Puebla.
In 1850, he was chosen to be the director of the Mexican National Archives. From 1855 to 1857, he worked as a senior official in the Ministry of Development. This was during the time when Ignacio Comonfort was president.
Later, in 1863, President Benito Juárez appointed him as a judge in the Supreme Court of Justice. During the French Intervention in Mexico (from 1864 to 1867), he worked as the director of the National Museum. This was under Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico.
In 1864, his important book called Geography of languages and ethnographic letter of Mexico was published. Because he worked for the Second Mexican Empire, he faced difficulties after the French left. He was held for a period of time.
After this difficult period, he returned to public life. Between 1880 and 1881, his most famous work, Ancient History and the Conquest of Mexico, was published in four volumes. Manuel Orozco y Berra was a pioneer in writing Mexican history. He was also the president of the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics.
In 1875, Orozco y Berra helped start the Mexican Academy of Language. He was also a member of other important groups, like the Natural History Society and the Mining Society. He was a member of the Spanish Royal Academy and the Royal Academy of History. He also belonged to archaeological and geographical societies in places like Santiago, Rome, and Paris. He was also part of the International Congress of Americanists.
He passed away in Mexico City on January 27, 1881.
