A Look Back: Maple City's History
Maple City started way back in 1866. Two people, William Parks and J. T. Sturtevant, built a factory there. This factory made "shoe pegs," which were tiny wooden pins used to hold parts of shoes together. They chose this spot because there were lots of maple trees nearby, which they used for their factory.
Because of all the maple wood, the community that grew around the factory was first called "Peg Town." When they wanted to get a post office, they decided to call the area "Maple." So, on March 9, 1875, the post office officially opened with the name "Maple City."
William H. Crowell bought the shoe peg factory that same year and became the first postmaster. Sadly, the factory burned down in 1880. But William Crowell didn't give up! In 1882, he built a new sawmill, which was a factory that cut logs into lumber. This sawmill kept running until 1916.
