Bolton: A Historic Spot
Bolton is a community located about 12 miles (19 kilometers) northwest of Alpena. It was named after Henry Bolton, who started a general store in Alpena back in 1866. Henry Bolton and his partner, Donal McRae, also ran a big lumber company. Bolton even had its own post office from 1880 until 1955.
Cathro: Another Early Settlement
Cathro is another community in the township. It's about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Alpena. This community was named after George Cathro, who was an important farmer in the area. Just like Bolton, Cathro also had a post office that served the community from 1894 until 1955. Both communities were located along the old Detroit and Mackinac Railway line.
