About Maquon
Where is Maquon Located?
Maquon is in the southern part of Knox County. A road called Illinois Route 97 goes right through the middle of the village. If you travel northwest on this road for about 16 miles (26 km), you'll reach Galesburg, which is the main city of Knox County. If you go southeast for about 1.5 miles (2.4 km), you'll find Illinois Route 8.
Maquon covers a total area of about 0.16 square miles (0.42 square kilometers), and all of it is land. The village is built on a small hill, or "bluff," about 1 mile (1.6 km) north and west of the Spoon River.
What Does "Maquon" Mean?
The name "Maquon" comes from the Potawatomi people. According to a book from 1976, the original word was "Amaquonsippi." This word means "mussel river" or "spoon-shaped-shell river." Over time, it was shortened to "Maquon," which simply means "spoon."
Maquon's Past
Stories passed down by people who lived in Maquon tell of a battle that happened in the 1800s. This battle was between the Potawatomi people and "white settlers" in a nearby area called Haw Creek Township. After this event, the Potawatomi people were forced to leave the Maquon area.
