María Vicuña began her political career by being elected to the National Assembly in 2009. The National Assembly is like Ecuador's parliament, where laws are made. She was re-elected to serve again in 2013, showing that people trusted her to represent them.
Working in the National Assembly
While in the National Assembly, María Vicuña was very active. She became the vice president of a major group that focused on the health and well-being of people in Ecuador. She also helped start a new group called the Commission on Education, Science, Technology, and Communication. This group worked on improving schools, science, and how people communicate.
Becoming a Government Minister
In May 2017, President Lenín Moreno chose María Vicuña to be the Minister of Urban Development and Housing. In this job, she was in charge of making sure people had good homes and that cities were well-planned.
Stepping Up as Acting Vice President
Later in 2017, the previous Vice President, Jorge Glas, was unable to continue his duties. Because of this, María Vicuña was asked to step in as the Acting Vice President. She took on this important role until a permanent decision could be made about the Vice President's position.
Serving as Vice President of Ecuador
After the situation with the previous Vice President was resolved, the National Assembly needed to choose a new Vice President. President Moreno provided a list of candidates for them to consider.
Being Sworn In
On January 6, 2018, María Vicuña officially became the Vice President of Ecuador. This happened after 70 members of the National Assembly voted for her. Only 17 lawmakers voted against her, and 19 chose not to vote. This was a big moment for Ecuador.
A Historic Role
María Vicuña was the second woman ever to hold the position of Vice President in Ecuador. The first woman to be Vice President was Rosalía Arteaga, who served in 1996. This shows how important María Vicuña's role was in her country's history.
End of Her Term
On December 3, 2018, María Vicuña was suspended from her duties as Vice President. The next day, on December 4, 2018, she announced that she would resign from her position. On December 11, 2018, Otto Sonnenholzner was chosen by the National Assembly to become the new Vice President of Ecuador.
