Life and Career of María Tubau
María Álvarez Tubau was born in Madrid, Spain. Her mother, Mercedes Tubau, was from Barcelona, and her father, Manuel Álvarez Robles, was from Avilés.
Early Acting Days
María started acting when she was just 12 years old. She trained with famous actors like Vico at the Teatro Apolo. She also learned from Mario at the Teatro de la Comedia .
She became popular as a funny actress in plays that mixed romance and drama.
Marriage and Success
After her first husband passed away in 1877, María married again in 1882. Her second husband was Ceferino Palencia
, who was a playwright and theater director.He helped her career a lot, making her one of the most important actresses in Madrid. Together, they started their own theater company at the Teatro de la Princesa.
Famous Plays and Recognition
María Tubau performed in many plays by Spanish writers of her time. These included works by Vital Aza, Miguel Ramos Carrión , and Benito Pérez Galdós. One of her most talked-about performances was in Galdós's play Doña Perfecta in 1896.
She also acted in plays by older, classic writers. These included Leandro Fernández de Moratín and Manuel Bretón de los Herreros. She even performed works by French playwrights like Henry Bataille and Victorien Sardou.
When she was 37, María received a special honor. In 1891, she was named "Doctor in Dramatic Art." This was a big deal, and many important people signed the document. These included famous writers and thinkers like José Zorrilla and Emilio Castelar.
Later Years and Legacy
María Tubau traveled around Spain and America, performing for many audiences. In 1904, she became a professor at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, teaching others how to act. She passed away in 1914.
