A Life in the Theatre

Early Life and Family

Antonio Vico Pinto was born in Jerez de la Frontera, a city in the southwest of Spain. He came from a family of actors, meaning performing was in his blood! His father, Antonio Vico y López de Adrián, was also an actor. Even today, Antonio Vico's family members continue to be involved in Spanish theatre.

Becoming a Star

Antonio Vico learned a lot from an older actor named José Valero. Valero taught him how to play charming, romantic characters. In 1864, Antonio joined the Victorino Tamayo theatre company.

Nine years later, in 1873, he became very well-known. This happened after his amazing performance in a play called "Los amantes de Teruel" at the Teatro Circo Paul in Madrid. Soon after, he teamed up with another actor, Rafael Calvo Revilla. They worked together often and had a very successful partnership.

Bringing Theatre to Life

Antonio Vico and Rafael Calvo were very important in making theatre popular again in Madrid. They were good friends with many famous writers of their time, like Galdós, Echegaray, and Cano. Even a young Antonio Machado, who would later become a famous poet, admired Vico's acting.

During this busy period, Vico acted in many plays. Some of his famous roles were in "En el puño de la espada," "La muerte en los labios," and "Otelo." He also performed in "El gran Galeoto" with his friend Rafael Calvo.

Teacher and Author

From 1882, Antonio Vico shared his knowledge by teaching at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Madrid. He also wrote a book about his life in 1902. This book was full of interesting stories and memories from his long career in theatre.

Final Curtain Call

Antonio Vico passed away in Nuevitas, a city in Cuba, while he was on a theatre tour in Latin America. He was first buried there. However, his body was later brought back to Spain and laid to rest at the Cementerio de San Justo in Madrid.
