María Alejandra Vicuña Muñoz was born on February 13, 1978. She is an important politician from Ecuador. She served as the Vice President of Ecuador for a period in 2018. Before that, she was the Minister of Urban Development and Housing.

Her Political Journey

María Alejandra Vicuña started her political career by being elected to the National Assembly. This is like the parliament or congress in other countries. She was first elected in 2009. She was re-elected for another term in 2013.

Working in the National Assembly

While she was a member of the National Assembly, she held important roles. She was the vice president of a big group that focused on health and well-being for people in Ecuador. She also helped start a new group. This group was about education, science, technology, and communication.

Becoming a Minister

In May 2017, President Lenin Moreno chose her for a new job. She became the Minister of Urban Development and Housing. This role meant she was in charge of things like city planning and homes.

Stepping Up as Acting Vice President

Later in 2017, the Vice President at the time, Jorge Glas, was unable to continue his duties. Because of this, María Vicuña was asked to step in. She became the Acting Vice President. She held this role until a new Vice President could be formally chosen.

After the previous Vice President could no longer serve, the National Assembly needed to elect a new one. President Moreno suggested a list of candidates. María Vicuña was on this list.

Being Sworn In

On January 6, 2018, María Vicuña officially became the Vice President of Ecuador. Many members of the National Assembly voted for her. She received 70 votes in favor. This made her the second woman ever to hold this high office in Ecuador. The first woman was Rosalía Arteaga in 1996.

Ending Her Term

On December 3, 2018, María Vicuña decided to step down from her duties. The next day, December 4, she announced her decision to resign as Vice President. On December 11, 2018, Otto Sonnenholzner was elected as the new Vice President of Ecuador. The National Assembly approved his appointment.
