María del Rosario de Silva y Gurtubay was an important Spanish noblewoman and a well-known person in society. She was born in Madrid, Spain, on April 4, 1900. She held many important titles, including Duchess of Alba de Tormes and Marchioness of San Vicente del Barco.
María del Rosario was the only child of her father, Alfonso de Silva, the 16th Duke of Híjar. This meant she inherited all his noble titles. She also inherited a large fortune from her mother, María del Rosario Gurtubay. People at the time thought she was one of the most beautiful women.
Her Marriage and Family Life
María del Rosario married Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart, 17th Duke of Alba in London on October 7, 1920. After her marriage, she became the Duchess of Alba.
In 1926, she gave birth to her only daughter, Cayetana. Cayetana later became a very famous Duchess of Alba herself.
Travels and Later Life
In 1924, María del Rosario and her husband, the Duke of Alba, traveled to the United States. They visited several big cities, including Chicago, New York, Washington, and Long Island.
María del Rosario lived with her family in the Liria Palace in Madrid. Sadly, she passed away there on January 11, 1934, at the young age of 33, due to tuberculosis.
