How Marble Valley Got Its Name
Marble Valley gets its name from a beautiful rock called Sylacauga marble. This type of marble was found and dug up (or 'quarried') right in this area. It was an important local resource.
Early Days and the Post Office
A post office was opened in Marble Valley in 1852. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years. It stayed open until 1934, when it was finally closed.
Marble Valley During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, which happened from 1861 to 1865, Marble Valley played a part. It became a place where soldiers from Coosa County could volunteer to join the Confederate States Army.
One soldier from Marble Valley, named William Wood, wrote letters home to his family. These letters shared his experiences during the war. Sadly, William Wood died in a northern prison in 1863. After his death, his brothers gathered his letters. They also collected information from other soldiers who knew him. They put all this together to create memoirs, which are like personal stories or memories.
