Marburg-Biedenkopf is a special kind of area in Germany called a Landkreis, or rural district. It's located in the western part of a German state called Hesse.

Discover the History of Marburg-Biedenkopf

This district was created in 1974. Before that, there were two separate districts: Marburg and Biedenkopf. The city of Marburg used to be its own "urban district." But in 1974, these three areas joined together to form the Marburg-Biedenkopf district we know today. The city of Marburg is now a "town with special status" within the district.

Marburg-Biedenkopf also has special friendships, called partnerships, with other places. These include Huntingdonshire in the United Kingdom, the borough of Charlottenburg in Berlin, and the district of Kościerzyna in Poland. These partnerships help people from different places learn about each other's cultures.

Geography of the District

The most important river flowing through the Marburg-Biedenkopf district is the Lahn. Rivers are often very important for towns and cities, providing water and sometimes even transportation.
