Racing Career
Early Years and Joining Porsche
Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Marc Lieb began his racing journey with go-karts in 1992. By 1995, he had moved up to cars, competing in the German Formula Renault series. He showed great talent and finished second in the championship in 1996.
In 2000, his skill caught the eye of Porsche, and he became a Porsche Junior driver. This program helps talented young drivers develop their careers. He raced in the Porsche Carrera Cup, a series where everyone drives the same type of Porsche car. In 2002, he won the Carrera Cup championship with four victories.
Becoming a Factory Driver
In 2003, Lieb became a full Porsche factory driver. He immediately found success, winning the N-GT championship in the FIA GT Championship with his teammate Stéphane Ortelli. That year, they also won the 2003 Spa 24 Hours, a major 24-hour race in Belgium.
Lieb also raced in the American Le Mans Series in 2004, where he won two races. During this time, he decided to go back to school. He studied engineering at a university in Esslingen, Germany. He successfully balanced his studies with his racing career, eventually earning his degree. He later used his engineering knowledge to help develop race cars at Porsche's workshop.
Success in Endurance Racing
From 2005 onwards, Lieb focused on endurance racing and became one of its biggest stars. In 2005, he won another championship in the FIA GT series and also won his class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time. He continued to win, taking the Le Mans Series championship in 2006, 2009, and 2010 with his team, Felbermayr-Proton.
He also won the challenging 24 Hours Nürburgring race four times between 2007 and 2011. This race is famous for its long and difficult track.
Winning the World Championship
In 2014, Porsche chose Lieb to be one of the drivers for their new Porsche 919 Hybrid race car. This car competed in the top class of racing, called LMP1, in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
The peak of his career came in 2016. Teaming up with drivers Romain Dumas and Neel Jani, Lieb won the overall victory at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans. This is one of the most famous and difficult races in the world. Winning it is a dream for many drivers. That same year, he and his teammates also won the FIA World Endurance Championship, making them the best endurance racers in the world.
In 2013, Lieb also set a very fast lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds around the Nürburgring Nordschleife track in a Porsche 918 Spyder, a street-legal sports car. This was one of the fastest times ever recorded for a road car on that track.
