History of Marcellus

Marcellus village was first settled in the late 1700s. It officially became a village in 1853. The village grew because of two main things. First, the Nine Mile Creek provided water power for mills. These mills made things like wool, paper, and even gunpowder.

Second, the Seneca Turnpike passed right through the village center. This important road made it easy for people and goods to travel to and from Marcellus.
