Marcelo Barbosa's Early Life and Music Journey
Marcelo Barbosa started playing the electric guitar when he was 11 years old. He learned from many teachers, especially Allan Marshall. By age 17, he was already a professional musician. He also taught music at two schools in his home city of Brasília.
He then decided to open his own school, focusing on electric guitar. Marcelo created his own teaching methods and wrote all the lesson materials. He also managed the school and other teachers.
Marcelo took classes and workshops from famous musicians. Some of these included Greg Howe, Lula Galvão, and Toninho Horta. In 2002, he finished summer courses at the well-known Berklee College of Music. He was one of 12 students chosen to receive a scholarship for the college's regular course. However, he could not continue his studies because of his responsibilities with GTR.
Before that, Marcelo joined a pop rock band from Brasília called Zero10. They released an EP and a full album named Novo Dia. They often played at different places in Brazil's capital city. Later, he restarted the band Khallice. This band played the progressive metal music he always enjoyed.
In September 2007, Marcelo was asked to join the band Almah. This band was formed by some members of Angra. He went on a national tour with them. By spring 2008, the members of Almah were finally set. In late April 2008, they started recording a new Almah album called Fragile Equality. The recording finished in July 2008.
Marcelo writes articles for important guitar magazines in Brazil. These include Guitar Class, Cover Guitarra, and Guitar Player. He also wrote a book about guitar techniques. It was part of the "Toque de Mestre" series.
Marcelo is supported by companies like Ibanez and Elixir Strings. At Expomusic 2006, a big music show in São Paulo, a major Brazilian guitar brand called TAGIMA released a new guitar. It was the MB-1, designed with Marcelo's ideas. This guitar is part of the company's special "Signature Series."
GTR Music Institute
Today, Marcelo's institute, GTR, is one of the biggest guitar schools in Latin America. More than 4,000 students have graduated from GTR. Over 600 people are currently studying at its two locations in Brasília.
Besides electric guitar, GTR offers courses for vocals, acoustic guitar, music production, and music business. GTR often organizes events like festivals and workshops. Famous musicians like Kiko Loureiro have attended these events. For its 10th anniversary, GTR released a special CD with 14 songs. These songs were recorded by some of its best teachers.
Marcelo Barbosa shared his thoughts on GTR. He said it started as a guitar institute. Now, it has classes for bass players, singers, and acoustic guitar players too. He is in charge of all the teaching materials for the guitar course. The school has grown a lot over the years. They try to teach all kinds of music, not just one style. This includes rock, metal, jazz, country, and Brazilian music.
