A Look at Marchagee's Past
The area around Marchagee has been recognized for a long time. In 1876, a special area was set aside for travelers. This spot was called Marchagee Well. The name "Marchagee" comes from an Aboriginal word. Its exact meaning is not known today.
In 1899, a railway station was built here. The Midland Railway Company set it up. This helped connect Marchagee to other places. It also made it easier to move goods.
Later, in 1906, large pieces of land were measured out. These were for farming. The town of Marchagee officially started in 1927. This is when it was "gazetted," meaning its status as a town was made official.
