Marco Minnemann's Music Career
Marco Minnemann has released more than a dozen solo albums. On these albums, he plays drums, other instruments, and sometimes sings. He has also played drums on over 100 studio albums for many different artists and bands.
Early Bands and Collaborations
Marco was once a member of a German band called Freaky Fukin Weirdoz. He also played and recorded with the German rock band H-Blockx. He has worked with the famous English musician Steven Wilson, who has been nominated for a Grammy Award.
Current Bands and Projects
Today, Marco is the drummer for the Mute Gods. This band is a trio led by Nick Beggs. Nick was part of the British new wave band Kajagoogoo. Since 2013, Marco has also played with the guitar legend Joe Satriani.
In June 2007, Marco was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer magazine. The magazine praised his unique drumming technique. He developed a special way of playing called "complex interdependence." This technique allows him to play different rhythms with each of his feet and hands at the same time.
The Normalizer 2 Project
In 2006, Marco recorded a 51-minute drum solo. This solo became the base for his "Normalizer 2" project. He shared this drum track with other musicians. He asked them to write and record their own music to go along with his drumming. Many of these recordings were released as albums where two musicians played together. Some of these albums include Modulator with Trey Gunn and 24 Tales with Alex Machacek.
Auditioning for Dream Theater
In 2011, Marco tried out to join the American progressive rock band Dream Theater. However, he did not join the group. He did not know their songs very well and did not want to commit to them completely.
Joining The Sea Within
In late 2017, Marco joined an international progressive rock "supergroup" called the Sea Within. A supergroup is a band made of famous musicians from other bands. He played on their first album, which came out in 2018. The band was started by Swedish guitarist Roine Stolt. It also includes bassist Jonas Reingold, guitarist Daniel Gildenlöw, and keyboard player Tom Brislin.
The Aristocrats and McStine & Minnemann
Marco is also a member of the Aristocrats. This is an instrumental rock power trio. He plays alongside Guthrie Govan and Bryan Beller. In 2019, the group released their fourth studio album, You know what...?
In 2020, Marco and his friend Randy McStine formed a duo called McStine & Minnemann. They released two albums that year: their self-titled album and McStine & Minnemann II.
Voice Acting Role
Marco Minnemann even used his voice in a TV show! He was a voice actor in the second season of the animated series Metalocalypse. The episode also featured Mike Patton from the band Faith No More. It aired in 2008 on Adult Swim.
