History of Marcola
Marcola has an interesting past. The first post office in this area opened in 1876. It was originally named "Isabel" after an early settler, Isabel Applegate.
How Marcola Got its Name
Between 1899 and 1900, a railroad was built through the Mohawk Valley. A new train station was set up near the post office. This station was given the name "Marcola." This name was created to honor Mary Cole, who was the wife of the community's founder, Columbus Cole. In 1901, the post office changed its name to "Marcola" to match the train station.
Earnest Bridge in Marcola
The Earnest Bridge is a covered bridge located in the Marcola area. It was built in 1938 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic bridge was even featured in the 1965 movie Shenandoah, starring James Stewart.
