Marcus Ostorius Scapula (consul 59) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Marcus Ostorius Scapula was an important Roman leader who lived a long time ago, during the time of the Roman Empire. He was a senator, which meant he was part of a powerful group that helped govern Rome.

In the year 59 AD, he became a "suffect consul." This was a high-ranking job, like being a top government official, but for part of the year. His father was Publius Ostorius Scapula, who was a governor in Roman Britain from 47 to 52 AD.

Early Life and Military Service

Marcus Ostorius Scapula started his career as a soldier. He served in Roman Britain, where his father was governor. This was a busy place with many Roman soldiers.

During a battle against a local tribe called the Iceni, young Scapula showed great bravery. He saved the life of another soldier. Because of this brave act, he was given a special award called the civic crown. This was a big honor for a Roman soldier.

After his time as a soldier, we don't know much about what he did until he became a consul. He likely continued to serve Rome in other ways.

Facing Legal Challenges

In 62 AD, Marcus Ostorius Scapula was involved in a legal case. A Roman official named Antistius Sosianus was accused of breaking a law called lex maiestas. This law was about showing respect to the emperor.

Sosianus was said to have written and read poems that made fun of Emperor Nero. He read these poems at a large gathering at Scapula's house. Scapula said he didn't hear anything wrong.

However, other people who were there said Sosianus did read the poems. Sosianus was found guilty and sent away from Rome.

Later Life and Death

Three years later, Sosianus was allowed to return from exile. He learned that Emperor Nero liked people who reported others. So, Sosianus made a serious accusation against Scapula.

Sosianus claimed that Scapula was trying to become emperor himself. Emperor Nero quickly believed this accusation. At the time, Scapula was living quietly on his farm far away.

Nero sent a soldier to make sure Scapula died. Scapula died in 65 AD.
