Early Life and Studies
Margaret Macpherson grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland. When she was older, she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. There, she began to study painting to become an artist.
Her Artistic Journey
Between 1880 and 1884, Margaret studied art in Switzerland. She learned from an artist named Auguste-Henri Berthoud. In 1885, she returned to Edinburgh. This is when she showed her art at the Royal Scottish Academy for the very first time. From 1887, her paintings were also shown at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
Moving to Paris
In 1889, Margaret Macpherson moved to Paris, France. She continued her art training there. She studied at the Academie Colarossi with famous teachers like Gustave Courtois and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret.
While in France, Margaret also spent time in an artists' village called Concarneau in 1891. Here, she started to focus on painting girls. These girls often wore traditional costumes from the Breton region of France.
Working in Two Countries
Margaret split her time between France and Scotland. She became a very successful portrait painter in Scotland. A portrait is a painting of a person. She even shared an art studio in Edinburgh with another artist, Josephine Hoxie Bartlett.
In 1892, Margaret and Josephine joined the Society of Scottish Artists. They held a joint art show in Edinburgh in 1895. Finally, in 1899, both artists moved to Paris permanently.
