Margaret Hillert (born January 22, 1920 – died October 11, 2014) was an American author, poet, and teacher. She lived in Michigan her whole life. Margaret Hillert was famous for writing over eighty books for young children who were just learning to read. She started writing poems when she was young. Her first poems were published in 1961.

Margaret Hillert was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1920. She is best known for her Dear Dragon book series. These books tell stories about a boy and his pet dragon. They also include helpful notes, word lists, and activities to help kids learn to read.

Her books use a small number of words and repeat them often. This helps new readers build their skills and feel more confident. Many artists have drawn pictures for Hillert's books. These include Ed Young, Nan Brooks, Kelly Oechsli, Kinuko Y. Craft, and Dick Martin.

Margaret Hillert studied at two universities. She earned a nursing degree from the University of Michigan. She also got a teaching degree from Wayne State University. Hillert taught First Grade for 34 years. She worked at Whittier Elementary in the Royal Oak Public School District. Margaret Hillert passed away on October 11, 2014, when she was 94 years old.
