First Marriage: John Beaufort
Margaret first married John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset. He was a son of John of Gaunt, a very powerful duke and son of King Edward III. Margaret and John Beaufort had six children together:
- Henry Beaufort, 2nd Earl of Somerset (1401–1418)
- Joan Beaufort (died 1445), who later became the Queen of Scotland by marrying James I of Scotland.
- John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset (1404–1444)
- Thomas Beaufort, Count of Perche (around 1405–1431)
- Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset (around 1406–1455)
- Margaret Beaufort (around 1408–1449)
In 1399, Margaret was given a special honor. She became a Lady Companion of the Order of the Garter. This is a very old and important order of knighthood in England.
Second Marriage: Thomas of Lancaster
After John Beaufort died in 1410, Margaret married again. Her second husband was Thomas of Lancaster, Duke of Clarence. He was the son of King Henry IV of England. This means he was the nephew of her first husband, John Beaufort. Margaret and Thomas did not have any children together.
