Margaret Bergman: Weaver and Inventor

Margaret Bergman was born in Sweden in 1872. She later moved to the United States. She became a master at weaving, which is the art of making fabric by crossing threads.

Amazing Folding Looms

In the 1930s, Margaret designed two unique weaving machines. These were called the Bergman Suitcase loom and the Bergman Floor loom. What made them special? They had frames that could fold up!

This folding design was very clever. It meant the looms could collapse even when they had threads on them. This made them much easier to move and store. It was a big help for weavers.

Margaret's husband, John, and her son, Arthur, helped her. They built these special looms at their home. Their home was in a place called Breidablick, near Poulsbo, in Washington.

The Yarn Barn and Teaching

Later, part of their barn was turned into a store. It was called the Yarn Barn. Here, people could buy yarn for their own weaving projects.

Margaret also loved to teach others about weaving. She started several groups called weaving guilds. These guilds were places where weavers could meet, learn, and share ideas. She even created her own special way of weaving. It is known as the 'Margaret Bergman technique'.

Margaret Olofsson Bergman passed away in 1948. She left behind a legacy of creativity and innovation in the world of weaving.
