Margaret Widdemer (born September 30, 1884 – died July 14, 1978) was an American writer. She wrote many poems and novels. In 1919, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her book of poems called The Old Road to Paradise. She shared this award with another famous poet, Carl Sandburg.

Biography

Margaret Widdemer was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where her father was a minister. She studied at the Drexel Institute Library School and finished in 1909.

She first became well-known because of her poem The Factories. This poem talked about child labor, which is when children are made to work instead of going to school or playing.

In 1919, she married Robert Haven Schauffler. He was also a writer and a musician who played the cello. He wrote many books about poetry, travel, and music.

Margaret Widdemer wrote a book about her life called Golden Years I Had. In this book, she shared stories about her friendships with other famous writers. Some of these writers included Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and T. S. Eliot.

Margaret Widdemer passed away in New York City in 1978.
