Margaret Wright (born around 1922 or 1923, died May 11, 1996) was an important community activist in Los Angeles, California. She was also a candidate for President of the United States representing a third party.
Margaret Wright's Early Life and Work
During World War II, Margaret Wright worked in a shipyard. This was a time when many women took on jobs traditionally done by men to help with the war effort. She was also featured in a film called The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter. This movie shared the stories of women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war.
Standing for President
In the 1976 United States presidential election, Margaret Wright ran for president. She represented the People's Party, which was a smaller political group. Her running mate, who would have been vice president, was Benjamin Spock. He had also run for president for the same party in 1972.
The People's Party ticket, with Wright and Spock, was also supported by another group called the Peace and Freedom Party. Some Bumper stickers during the election even called her a "Socialist for President." In the election, they received 49,016 votes. This was a small number, about 0.06% of all votes.
Community Activism
Beyond her presidential campaign, Margaret Wright was a dedicated activist. She helped start and was very active in a group called Women against Racism. This group worked to fight against racism in the Watts area of Los Angeles.
