Margaret of Brabant was an important queen from a long time ago. She was born on October 4, 1276. Her parents were John I, Duke of Brabant and Margaret of Flanders. Margaret married Henry, who was the Count of Luxembourg. When Henry became the King of Germany in 1308, Margaret became the Queen of Germany.
Marriage and Family Life
Margaret married Henry on July 9, 1292. This marriage helped to end a long-standing disagreement. The disagreement was about a place called the Duchy of Limburg. When Margaret and Henry got married, the Duke of Brabant gave up his claim to Limburg.
Many people said that Margaret and Henry had a very happy marriage. In 1308, when her husband was crowned King, Margaret became the Queen consort of Germany. A "Queen consort" is the wife of a reigning king.
Margaret and Henry had three children:
- John the Blind (born August 10, 1296 – died August 26, 1346). He became the Count of Luxembourg in 1309 and later the King of Bohemia. John first married Elisabeth of Bohemia. They had children, including Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and Bonne of Bohemia. Bonne later became the first wife of the future King John II of France. After Elisabeth passed away in 1330, John married Beatrice of Bourbon. They also had children together.
- Maria (born 1304 – died March 26, 1324). She married Charles IV of France. Sadly, Maria died while giving birth to a child.
- Beatrix (born 1305 – died November 11, 1319). She married Charles I of Hungary. Beatrix also passed away during childbirth.
Journey to Italy and Legacy
Margaret traveled with her husband, King Henry, on his journey to Italy. During this trip, she became very sick while they were at a place called Brescia. She died a few months later in Genoa, Italy. Margaret was buried in a church there called San Francesco di Castelletto.
Her death was written down in a historical record in December 1311. This record was called the Gesta Baldewini Luczenburch. To honor Margaret, King Henry asked a famous artist named Giovanni Pisano to create a special monument for her in 1313. Parts of this beautiful monument can still be seen today in Genoa. You can find them in the Museo di Sant'Agostino and the Galleria Nazionale della Liguria in Palazzo Spinola.
