Isabella's Early Life and Marriage
Isabella was first promised in marriage to Oshin, King of Armenia. Her father, King James II, wanted to arrange this marriage because he hoped to get some special religious items, called relics, from Armenia for a cathedral in Spain. However, the people in Armenia did not want closer ties with the Catholic countries in the west, so the marriage plans did not work out.
Instead, on May 11, 1315, Isabella married Frederick I of Austria in a town called Ravensburg. Frederick was also known as the King of Germany. After her marriage, Isabella was often called Elisabeth in Germany and Austria.
Royal Life and Co-Rulership
Frederick had been chosen as one of two rival Kings of Germany in October 1314. His rival was Louis IV of Bavaria. This meant that Isabella became one of two Queens of Germany, along with Beatrix von Silesia-Glogau, who was Louis IV's wife.
On September 5, 1325, Frederick I and Louis IV decided to end their conflict. They agreed to rule together as co-rulers. However, Frederick soon became the junior co-ruler, meaning he had less power. He then went back to Austria and stayed there until he died on January 13, 1330.
It is believed that Isabella lost her eyesight in the last six years of her life. She was buried in Vienna, Austria.
Children of Isabella and Frederick
Isabella and Frederick had at least three children:
- Frederick of Austria (born 1316, died 1322).
- Elisabeth of Austria (born 1317, died October 23, 1336).
- Anna of Austria (born 1318, died December 14, 1343). Anna married Henry XV, Duke of Bavaria first, and then John Henry, Count of Gorizia.
