Margarita Carrera Molina (born September 16, 1929 – died March 31, 2018) was an important writer, thinker, and teacher from Guatemala. She was known for her deep thoughts and beautiful writing. Margarita was a member of the Academia Guatemalteca de la Lengua, which is like a special club for people who are experts in the Spanish language. In 1996, she won the Miguel Ángel Asturias National Prize in Literature, a top award for writers in Guatemala.

Margarita Carrera Molina was born in Guatemala City on September 16, 1929. Her father was Antonio Carrera Martello from France, and her mother was Josefina Molina Llardén. She loved to learn and went to the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. In 1957, she made history by becoming the first woman to graduate with a degree in Literature from that university.

A Career in Writing and Teaching

Margarita Carrera began teaching at her old university in 1957. She also taught at other universities like Rafael Landívar University and Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. She traveled a lot to share her ideas. She gave talks in many countries, including Spain, Germany, Mexico, and the United States.

In 1967, Margarita became the first woman ever to join the Academia Guatemalteca de la Lengua. This was a big step for women in literature and academics in Guatemala.

She joined the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 1982. From 1993, she wrote regular articles, called columns, for a newspaper in Guatemala called Prensa Libre. She also wrote for other newspapers. She published two columns every week and wrote more than twenty books!

In 1996, she received the Miguel Ángel Asturias National Prize in Literature. This award recognized her amazing contributions to Guatemalan literature.

Margarita often wrote about famous thinkers and writers. She studied people like Jorge Luis Borges, Sigmund Freud, and Friedrich Nietzsche. She even wrote a novel about the life of Juan José Gerardi Conedera, a important person in Guatemala. This book was called En la mirilla del jaguar and came out in 2002.

Personal Life and Passing

Margarita Carrera was married for seven years and later divorced. She had two children. She passed away in Guatemala on March 31, 2018, at the age of 88. Her work continues to inspire many people.
