Margarita María Cedeño Lizardo is a well-known politician from the Dominican Republic. She served as the Vice President of the Dominican Republic from 2012 to 2020. Before that, she was the First Lady of the Dominican Republic from 2004 to 2012. She was married to former president, Leonel Fernández.

Her Early Life and Education

Margarita Cedeño was born on May 1, 1965, in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. Her parents are Luis Emilio Cedeño Matos and Angela Margarita Lizardo Olivares.

She studied law and became a lawyer. She earned her bachelor's degree from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. Later, she received a master's degree in economic law from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. She also took part in special courses at famous universities like Georgetown University and Harvard University in the United States, and Geneva University in Switzerland.

In 2009, Margarita Cedeño was chosen as a FAO Goodwill Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This role means she helped promote the goals of the FAO, especially in fighting hunger.

Margarita Cedeño has had an important career in politics. She has held two very high positions in her country.

As First Lady

From 2004 to 2012, Margarita Cedeño was the First Lady of the Dominican Republic. During this time, her husband, Leonel Fernández, was the president. As First Lady, she worked on many social programs. These programs helped children, young people, single mothers, and families. They focused on improving health and education for many people across the country.

Becoming Vice President

In 2011, Margarita Cedeño decided to run for president. She was a candidate for the Dominican Liberation Party. However, she later became the running mate for Danilo Medina.

On May 20, 2012, she was elected as the Vice President of the Dominican Republic. She served in this role from 2012 to 2020. She was the second woman in her country's history to become Vice President. The first was Milagros Ortiz Bosch, who served from 2000 to 2004.
