Early Life and Education

Maria Fearing was born in 1838. She was born into slavery near Gainesville, Alabama. Her parents were Mary and Jesse. She lived on a large farm called Oak Hill plantation. For 30 years, she worked in the owner's home. She was a nanny and helped with house chores.

After slavery ended, Maria was finally free. She learned to read and write when she was 33 years old. This was a big achievement! She then went to the Freedman's Bureau School in Talladega, Alabama. She studied hard and became a qualified teacher. Later, she taught school in Anniston, Alabama.

Missionary Work in Africa

Even though she was 56 years old, Maria Fearing felt a strong calling. In 1894, she traveled to Africa with William Henry Sheppard. They went to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as Presbyterian missionaries. The church was worried she was too old. So, Maria used her own money to start her mission. She even sold her home to pay for it!

For 20 years, Maria worked tirelessly in Congo. She taught many students. She also helped translate the Bible into local languages. A very special part of her work was buying people out of slavery. She helped them gain their freedom.

Her most famous achievement was starting the Pantops Home for Girls. This home was in a place called Luebo, Congo. It provided a safe place and education for girls. People in Congo called her "mama wa Mputu." This means "Mother from far away." Maria Fearing stayed in Africa longer than many younger missionaries. She only retired in 1915 because of age rules. She was a true inspiration!
