Maria Maddalena of Austria (born October 7, 1589 – died November 1, 1631) was an important royal figure in Italy. She became the Grand Duchess of Tuscany when her husband, Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, took the throne in 1609. She held this title until his death in 1621.
Maria Maddalena and Cosimo II had eight children together. After her husband passed away, their son Ferdinando II was still too young to rule. Because of this, Maria Maddalena and her mother-in-law, Christina of Lorraine, became regents. This means they ruled Tuscany together until Ferdinando was old enough. Maria Maddalena passed away in Padua, Italy.
