Maria Sole Tognazzi (born on May 2, 1971) is a talented Italian film director. She creates movies that tell interesting stories.

Maria Sole Tognazzi comes from a family of artists. Her father, Ugo Tognazzi, was a famous actor and director. Her mother, Franca Bettoia, was an actress. Maria Sole has a brother named Gianmarco Tognazzi, who is also an actor. She also has two half-brothers: Ricky Tognazzi, an actor and director, and Thomas Robsahm, a film director and producer from Norway.

Her Journey as a Director

Maria Sole Tognazzi spent several years learning about directing. She started her career by making short films. Her first short film was Non finisce qui in 1997. After that, she made two more short films: C'ero anch'io (1999) and Sempre a tempo (2000).

Her first full-length movie was Past Perfect (called Passato prossimo in Italian) in 2003. She helped write the story for this film with Daniele Prato. For Past Perfect, she won an important award called the Nastro d'Argento for Best New Director in 2003. This award is given by the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists. Her film was also shown at the 25th Moscow International Film Festival.

Later Films and Documentaries

Maria Sole's second feature film was The Man Who Loves (L'uomo che ama in Italian), released in 2008. She wrote this movie with Ivan Cotroneo. It was filmed in beautiful locations like Lake Orta and Turin. Famous actors like Pierfrancesco Favino and Monica Bellucci starred in it.

In 2010, she made a documentary film called Ritratto di mio padre (Portrait of My Father). This film was shown at the Rome Film Festival. Her third feature film, A Five Star Life (Viaggio sola in Italian), came out in 2013. It starred Margherita Buy and was written with Ivan Cotroneo and Francesca Marciano.

Her film Me, Myself and Her (2015) was special because it was one of the first Italian romantic comedies to show a lesbian relationship. In 2020, she directed episodes for the Italian TV series Petra.
