Maria Teresa Felicitas d'Este was a princess born in Modena, Italy. She lived from 1726 to 1754. When she married, she became the Duchess of Penthièvre in France. She was also the grandmother of Louis Philippe I, who would later become a king.
Maria Teresa was one of nine children. She was the first daughter in her family. Her mother later moved back to France. In France, Maria Teresa became engaged to the very rich Duke of Penthièvre. He was a distant cousin of hers. In France, she was known as Marie Thérèse Félicité.

Her Marriage to the Duke
In 1744, Maria Teresa married her second cousin, Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre. Their wedding took place at the famous Palace of Versailles in France.
They had a very happy marriage. Together, they had seven children. Sadly, only two of their children lived past childhood.
Her Children
Maria Teresa and the Duke of Penthièvre had seven children:
- Louis Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Rambouillet (1746–1749). He died when he was very young.
- Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, known as the "Prince of Lamballe" (1747–1768). He married Princess Marie Louise of Savoy. They did not have any children.
- Jean Marie de Bourbon (1748–1755), Duke of Châteauvillain. He also died young.
- Vincent de Bourbon, Count of Guingamp (1750–1752). He died as a toddler.
- Marie Louise de Bourbon, Mademoiselle de Penthièvre (1751–1753). She passed away when she was very young.
- Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon (1753–1821). She was first known as Mademoiselle d'Ivoy and later Mademoiselle de Penthièvre. She married Philippe d'Orléans, Duke of Orléans and had children.
- Louis Marie Félicité de Bourbon (1754–1754). He died just one day after he was born.
Her Death and Legacy
Maria Teresa Félicité died in 1754 while giving birth to her last son, Louis Marie Félicité. Her baby also died shortly after birth.
Her husband, the Duke of Penthièvre, was so sad that he never married again. He lived until 1793. Later, Maria Teresa's daughter, Marie Adélaïde, moved her mother's body. She was reburied in the Royal Chapel in Dreux, France.
