Maria Walliser (born on May 27, 1963) is a famous former alpine skier from Switzerland. She was one of the best skiers in the world during the 1980s.

Maria Walliser's Amazing Ski Career

Maria Walliser grew up in Mosnang, Switzerland. Her father was a successful cattle breeder. She started her journey in the World Cup in 1980.

During the 1980s, Maria was part of a super strong Swiss team. Along with teammates like Erika Hess, Michela Figini, and Vreni Schneider, she truly dominated women's alpine skiing.

Winning World Cups and Medals

Maria achieved many great things in her career. She won the overall World Cup title twice, in 1986 and 1987. This means she was the top skier across all events for those seasons!

She also won three gold medals at the World Championships. These big wins happened in 1987 and 1989. Maria also earned three Olympic medals. She won a silver medal at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. Then, at the 1988 Calgary Olympics, she won two bronze medals.

Maria Walliser stopped competing in 1990. By then, she had reached the podium 72 times in World Cup races. She had an incredible 25 victories!

Life After Skiing

After retiring from skiing, Maria continued to make a difference. In 2000, she became the president of a Swiss health organization. This group, called "Die Stiftung Folsäure Offensive Schweiz," works to help people get enough folate, which is an important vitamin.
